The co-authored article ‘Independence, Globality, and the Battle of Ideas: A Dialogue on Liberty’ by Thomas Albert Ashby (currently affiliated with our lab as a JSPS Research Fellow) and Quentin Skinner (Queen Mary University of London) has been published in the journal Global Intellectual History.

This discussion article focusses on the history and theory of freedom, particularly in relation to the arguments of Skinner’s recent book, Liberty as Independence: The Making and Unmaking of a Political Ideal (2025). Alongside a wide-ranging exploration into seventeenth- and eighteenth-century anglophone political thought, this dialogue engages questions relating to historical methodology, the possibilities and perils of artificial intelligence, and how to think about historical ideas in a global context.
